Topic: Rootstock

 Grafting
The rootstock used for cleft grafting should range from 1 to 4 inches in diameter and should be straight grained.
These cuts on the rootstock and scion must be the same length and have the same slope so that a maximum amount of cambial tissue will make contact when the two halves are joined.
In contrast to cleft grafting, this technique can be applied to rootstock of larger diameter (4 to 12 inches) and is done during early spring when the bark slips easily from the wood but before major sap flow.

ho-39 REPRODUCING FRUIT TREES BY GRAFTAGE
Peach seed commonly used for rootstock production include `Lovell' `Halford,' `Elberta,' and `Rutgers Red Leaf.' `Nemaguard' is sometimes used for nematode resistance and `Siberian C' is occasionally used to provide winter hardiness and moderate dwarfing of the scion cultivar, but it does not survive well in Kentucky.
Use Pyrus calleryana seedlings as the rootstock, bud the desired scion cultivar as low as possible on the stock, and plant the finished tree so that all of the P.
Peach rootstocks are best grown from seed planted in the fall.

Citrus Rootstock Usage in the Indian River Region
Broader plantings and longer experience with the "best" new rootstocks will inevitably identify problems and limitations for at least some of them, but it is likely that a few of the current advanced selections will prove attractive and will be used for a substantial proportion of Indian River citrus production in the next twenty years.
A wide range of new citrus rootstocks is being developed by both the University of Florida and the USDA-Horticultural Research Laboratory in Ft. Pierce, FL, and promising rootstocks from other areas are regularly brought to Florida for evaluation.
Finally, while sour orange was a superior rootstock on all Indian River citrus soil types, no other rootstock has been proven as an excellent choice for grapefruit on high pH soils or those that contain substantial clay, making rootstock selection difficult where these soils are present.

 Sweet Cherry Rootstocks
Rootstocks are evaluated for their influence on survival, tree growth, flower density, yield, fruit size, soluble solids, and suckering.
Of particular interest is new rootstock evaluation, characterization of rootstock influence on flower bud density, Armillaria root rot resistance, virus sensitivity of rootstocks, rootstock incompatibility with commercial scion varieties, and gene expression changes associated with rootstock induced dwarfing.
With some of these rootstocks, there is a potential problem of excessive cropping levels when grafted with very productive scion cultivars.

Budding Fruit Trees and Ornamental Plants
The rootstock is grown from seed using the techniques described on the Growing Plants from Seed page.
Remember, a rootstock is a small tree seedling, and in most cases the seedlings are planted in the field, and the budding is done right in the field, where the plant is actively growing.
If you have 100 different crabapple rootstocks that you grew from seed, you can grow many different varieties of flowering crabapples by inserting different varieties of buds into these rootstocks.

 CITRUS PROPAGATION AND ROOTSTOCKS
These will be used to bud the new rootstock when it is ready.
If you are more adventuresome, in a few years also plant some accepted rootstock varieties for grafting using budwood from the new trees you have introduced.
If you live in an area where citrus is not a major crop but would like to introduce it, you might consider trying some of the polyembryonic seeds.

 About the Vine
The scion and rootstock graft is callused for 60 to 90 days in a high humidity environment at 78 to 80 degrees F, then planted in a nursery row and grown for one year, sold and transplanted as a Dormant BenchGrafted Vine.
However, if a rootstock is not needed it should not be used because if the vine freezes to the ground, it is very difficult to regraft the vine.
A third system for establishing vines with a rootstock is to plant rootstock rootings in the spring, grow them in the vineyard for one year and Field Graft the vines one or two years later.

Botany - Rootstock for Florida Roses
Their natural roots are prone to just about every disease and insect known to man. Therefore, they must be grafted or budded onto hardy rootstock with an extensive root system.
Fortuniana rootstock does well in almost any type of soil with the possible exception of heavy clay, and will even survive some freezing temperatures if allowed to acclimate.
When all others are sitting with a catalog and dreaming of next spring's first bloom, we are in the most glorious flush of bloom, cutting buckets of roses for our Christmas Dinner tables.

Trees on this rootstock are not dwarfed in California and Florida and the dwarfing reported in South Africa (14) was ascribed to the rootstock's sensitivity to the endemic citrus tristeza virus (CTV) (10).
Yuma citrange is not currently recommended as a commercial rootstock in South Africa, but, because of the dwarfing effect this rootstock has on scions, it has potential where high density plantings are being considered (7, 14).
Delta Valencia trees on Yuma citrange rootstock were inoculated respectively with two mild (GFMS 12 and T55), an intermediate (GFMS 10) and a severe (GFSS 1) citrus tristeza virus (CTV) isolate prior to planting in the field.

 Rootstock Information
The semi-dwarf rootstock will produce mature trees ranging in height from 12 to 20 feet, while trees on dwarf rootstock will be 6 to 10 feet, depending on the amount of pruning employed by the grower.
For the majority of our trees, we use MM.7 and MM.111 as these rootstocks are adaptable to nearly all soil types.
Best rootstock for harsher mountain growing conditions and recommended for use over a wide range of soil and climatic conditions.

Using both traditional plant breeding and genetic engineering methods, researchers can incorporate insect and disease resistance into existing rootstock material, as well as develop rootstocks with enhanced horticultural performance as a greater understanding of the physiology of multiple genetic systems is elucidated.
New pome- and stone-fruit rootstocks cannot be recommended to commercial growers without reservations until there is sustained research as to soil and climatic adaptability, root anchorage, size control, precocity, productivity, pest resistance, and propagation ability.
These problems require that rootstocks be tested under several North American climates and that modifications of training and pruning techniques be developed to match local growing conditions.

Grafting and Budding Nursery Crop Plants
For example, Pink Sachet dogwood can be budded or grafted onto White Flowering dogwood rootstock and vice versa.
Grafting and budding are horticultural techniques used to join parts from two or more plants so that they appear to grow as a single plant.
These methods of plant reproduction are usually chosen because cuttings from the desired plant root poorly (or not at all).

 Managing Mark Rootstock
While it was the best rootstock in the trial, problems arose in the planting, as have been observed elsewhere; Root Mass Proliferation RMP (ground line swelling) and runting-out or decline in latter years.
The trees are irrigated by drip and the soil is a heavy loam.
While this rootstock has disappointed many grower because of some the recent negative findings, it still has potential as a producer for heavy soil sites.

 Cool Roses - Fortuniana Rootstock
Fortuniana Rootstock not only produces more disease and insect resistant plants, but, also much bigger bushes and flowers.
Fortuniana Rootstock will not only cause the rose to grow faster, but it also greatly increases the size of the flowers.

 Rose Rootstocks
Whatever rootstock is used, once the plant has been budded and is growing on the understock, it takes its inherent qualities from the grafted cultivar.
After the bud-eye produces adequate growth, the top of the rootstock plant is cut away entirely, leaving Peace growing on the roots of the understock.

 Comparing Citrus Rootstocks
The ideal rootstock is likely to vary with the type of soil, its depth and previous use.
The type and variety of citrus to be grown is sometimes an important factor in deciding which rootstock will give the best performance.
Generally in soils with less than 0.6 m of sandy or sandy loam top soil, other crops are recommended.

HortResearch Publication - Beware of Off-type Citrus Rootstocks
The tree in the front left is on a nucellar (true-to-type) rootstock, the small stunted tree on the right has a zygotic (off-type) rootstock.
An area of concern is the apparent lack of genetic uniformity in rootstock populations due to insufficient roguing at the seedling stage.
The propagation of uniform citrus rootstocks depends upon the production of clonal plants from nucellar seedlings.

Texas Citrus - Rootstock and Scion Varieties
A rootstock for Valley citrus must be adapted to alkalinity, salinity and calcareous soils, should be resistant to Phytophthora and virus diseases, provide some measure of cold tolerance and produce good yields of high-quality fruit.
The success of a rootstock is determined by its tolerance to prevailing conditions of soil, climate and disease, while still producing high yields of good quality fruit.
Until a better rootstock than sour orange emerges or until the dual threat of citrus tristeza virus and the brown citrus aphid appears eminent in Texas, there is not likely to be any significant change in rootstocks in Texas citrus.

 apples
Choosing one or the other of these rootstocks does not influence the type of fruit yielded by a tree, but for Northern growers it can have a big effect on how winter-hardy the tree is, how well it grows, and whether it produces a crop.
A well-pruned apple tree on Antonovka rootstock, when grown in Zones 3-5, will be equivalent to a ``semi-dwarf'' tree in size (10-12 feet at maturity), and it will have many advantages.
``Standard'' means only that Antonovka is not a dwarfing rootstock; it will not limit the growth and thus the ultimate size of the tree, but rather will allow it to grow freely to its full size, about 12-15 feet.

Results of Scion and Rootstock Trials for Citrus in Arizona - 1997
Likewise, the ideal citrus rootstock must be compatible with the scion, be adaptable to the appropriate soil and climactic factors and should also improve one or more of the following characteristics: pest and disease resistance, cold tolerance, harvest date, internal and external fruit quality, yield and post-harvest quality.
Five rootstocks, 'Carrizo' citrange, Citrus macrophylla, Rough lemon, Swingle citrumelo and Citrus volkameriana were selected for evaluation using 'Limoneira 8A Lisbon' as the scion.
There is no disputing the importance of citrus cultivars and rootstocks to desert citrus production.

Short Apple Trees, Faster and Healthier
This research is part of Plant, Microbial, and Insect Genetic Research, Genomics, and Genetic Improvement, an ARS National Program (#301) described on the World Wide Web at www.nps.ars.usda.gov.
That's because one of their top priorities is development of disease-resistant dwarf and semidwarf lines of apple tree roots—also known as rootstocks.
Other stresses are the soilborne illnesses such as root rot, which attacks apples—causing a 2- to 3-year decline in the tree and its eventual death—and replant disease, which causes fruit trees to grow poorly in soil that previously supported the same, or closely related, species.

The 3rd International Cherry Research Symposium
Major environmental hurdles exist, such as high pH calcareous soils, disease pressures, and frequent rainfall, but Chinese scientists have begun collaborations with cherry breeders from Hungary and Ukraine to improve both their varieties and their rootstocks, and are actively seeking production expertise from international consultants.
The highest yields were on DAN.6 and 12, both of which were 58% the size of Colt (others ranged from 22% to 51%) and all had better yield efficiencies (yield per orchard-canopy area) than Colt during the first six years of cropping.
Sweet cherry production in China is currently minimal, but has been targeted as a development project by the United Nations for Shaanxi Province, which has already seen large increases in apple and peach production.

 Sundry Hybrids and Rootstocks
Seedlings are important in most citrus-growing areas as rootstocks for various Citrus and related species.
In early 1985, citrange hybrids 'C35' and 'C32' ('Ruby' orange X trifoliate orange) were released by the Citrus Research Center, Riverside, California, for trial as rootstocks because of their resistance to the citrus nematode, also to Phytophthora spp.
The first crosses were made by Dr. Swingle at Eustis, Florida, in 1909.

PERFORMANCE OF THE NC-140 CHERRY ROOTSTOCK TRIALS IN NORTH AMERICA
While these rootstocks have been used for more than 250 years, horticultural limitations exist, and new rootstock cultivars are sought which can increase scion productivity, control vigor and widen the range of soil adaptability.
The major rootstocks used in North America for the production of cherry cultivars are seedlings of Prunus avium L.
A NC-140 trial was established in 1987 to test many new rootstocks in twenty sites in North America with scion cultivars of ‘Montmorency’ sour cherry or one of two sweet cherries, ‘Hedelfinger’ or ‘Bing’ (eastern and western North America, respectively).

Size classes are estimated as the relative percent tree size of an own-rooted (full sized) tree, e.g.
size class 1 represents a rootstock that produces a tree 10-20% the size that an own-rooted tree would produce under similar conditions.
The size class of a rootstock is the primary characteristic of importance, and comparisons of scion productivity on rootstocks of widely differing size classes is not recommended.
