 The Pike of New York
Similar in appearance to northern pike, muskellunge differ by having scales only on the upper half of both the cheeks and gill covers, and 12 to 18 sensory pores on the undersurface of the lower jaw.
The pike's body shape, coloring, and eating methods are well suited to its predatory nature.
Northern pike can be distinguished from their cousins, the pickerels, by the scaleless lower half of the gill covers.

 FISHING  FOR  PIKE
If fishing over sand, and that is more likely in a harbour for example, then attach the weight as before, but tie the first loop about 1 foot up the reel line and have the first hook on a 1.5 to 2 foot flowing line.
The fish in these rocky areas are probably not bottom feeding types anyway, so the suspended bait is likely to be more productive.
The only criteria is that the weight should be heavy enough to hold bottom, but not be too heavy for the rod.

As summer warms up, and water temperatures reach into the upper 60° range or even into the low 70° range, the largest pike will move to deep water, 15 feet or more, and can often be difficult to find.
