The great distinction of this genus is that the tubular calyx (the whorl of green leaf-like appendages at the base of the flower) enlarges after the flower has been pollinated.
The domesticated ground cherry (Physalis pubescens) bears slightly larger fruit that may or may not be more flavorful than the previously mentioned native varieties.
The Chinese lantern plant is the only Physalis species cultivated for its ornamental value, but I could give a strong case that other ground cherry species are equally pleasing to the eye.
