Mosquito fern - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mosquito ferns are safe to grow in cool temperate areas with prolonged freezing in winter, as they cannot overwinter in these conditions.
Because of their nitrogen -fixing capability, mosquito ferns have enabled an agricultural revolution in parts of southeast Asia.
Most of the species can produce large amounts of anthocyanins in bright sunlight, creating an intense red color and causing the water surface to appear to be covered with a red carpet.

 American Fern Society Spore Exchange
Ferns and their allies were the dominant form of vascular plant until the Mesozoic Era (the age of the Dinosaurs) when seed bearing plants came into prominence.
The other major form of propagation is vegetatively via their rhizomes, in an infertile hybrid (there are quite a few among the ferns) this would be their only form of propagation..
The Lycopodiums have a very similar life cycle, the main difference is that their prothallia normally grow underground gaining nutrients with the help of mycorrhizal fungus.

It is a fern of true global economic importance--it is the green manure crop grown in Asia which is plowed under to fertilize the rice crop.
It is even possible to grow some of the shade lovers in the sun, but soil preparation and water are crucial to survival.
Ferns appreciate an occasional leaf mold or aged compost supplement, but don’t respond well to commercial fertilizer.

 MOSQUITO FERN
The Mosquito Fern prefers moderately dry climates, but where saline soils are not widespread (so that salt does not rise to intolerable levels during the water-level reduction which seems necessary for its development).
Its niche is a precise one, but the plant has the capacity to "wait out" unacceptable conditions - not unlike lake-bottom 'seed banks' of some emergent plant species in eastern Canada.
Populations completely disappear each fall/winter and do not show any evidence of survival until conditions are suitable for growth, then, the population expands quickly.

 Robyn's Mosquito Page
If a pesticide or other chemical kills mosquitoes, it is guaranteed to kill other flies (good and bad) and most likely all other insects, sometimes fish, and often amphibians.
People also do not realize that mosquitoes have some beneficial qualities mainly as food sources for fish and aquatic insects as larvae and for dragonflies, other insects, and bats as adults.
This is because we do NOT use pesticides which allows the other insects and animals to consume the mosquitoes without being poisoned themselves.

But we definitely have mosquitoes in North Idaho, and in some areas, they can be really bad, especially in late spring and early summer.
Swallows, for example, consume large quanties of mosquitoes and other insects.
The nasty critters breed in standing water, so the more spring runoff we have, the more opportunity the bugs have to reproduce.

Azolla exists normally in small channels near by or in restricted zones of the upper Guadiana river where the species referred is Azolla caroliniana, but in the present case (lower Guadiana river) the fern bloom species is composed by Azolla filiculoides.
This fact, associated with the nutrients concentration in the river, namely the P2O5 and NH4, allowed the fern to make a progressive occupation of new ecological spaces, ending with the bloom observed in 1993, extended for several kilometers in the Portuguese sector of the Guadiana river.
In Portugal the genus Azolla is represented by two species (Azolla filiculoides and Azolla caroliniana) which grow in several hydrographic basins.

Conservatory Virtual Tour- Ferns and Fern Allies
Floating ferns in their natural setting provide cover for fish and other animals, and some are food to certain types of fish.
These aquatic ferns display hundreds of fine translucent hairs that hang down in the water below them, absorbing nutrients for the plant just as true roots.
The fern plant, as most people are familiar with, is the sporophyte generation and it produces dust-like spores.
