Manure - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manure is organic matter used as fertilizer in agriculture.
Manure has been used for centuries as a fertilizer for farming, as it is rich in nitrogen and other nutrients which facilitate the growth of plants.
Manures contribute to the fertility of the soil by adding organic matter and nutrients, such as nitrogen that is trapped by bacteria in the soil.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manure

Arlington Organic Garden Club, Arlington TX
The manure was spread on the soil as a fertilizer to replenish the nutrients and trace minerals which had been removed in the process of harvest.
Manure is the oldest and most effective fertilizer known to man. As long as man has used domesticated animals and worked the soil, manure, which is sometimes referred to as "dung" has been used to feed the soil and plants.
Manure can return 70 percent of the nitrogen, 75 percent of the phosphorus and 80 percent of the potash that was taken from the soil to feed the animals.

Manure: Composting chicken, steer and hog manure
Manure is an excellent fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other nutrients.
Manure is also helpful in improving soil fertility in cut areas from land leveling.
Manure is a source of many nutrients including: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and many others.

 Livestock Manure Sampling
Laboratory analysis of manure is an important management tool to use crop nutrients profitably and efficiently on the farm.
The nutrient content of manure can vary from farm to farm and species to species.
Estimates of manure nutrient content are available from a number of published sources, but nutrient composition varies widely between farms due to differences in animal species and management, and manure storage and handling (Table 1).

 Beef Manure Management
Beef cattle feedlot manure was composted in a windrow on an open concrete area in 1992, 1993, and 1994 to determine the amounts of nutrient, C, and mass loss during composting.
Manure, incorporated by cultivating, rototilling or plowing, was applied annually from 1973 to 1983 at 30, 60, and 90 Mg ha-1 (wet wt.) and 60, 120, and 180 Mg ha-1, respectively, to nonirrigated and irrigated dark brown Chernozemic (Typic Haploborolls) clay loam soil.
At higher manure and moisture levels, rates of development and survival were similar to those reported previously All soil samples collected from a feedlot dairy contained higher levels of manure solids than the highest level tested in the laboratory.

Properly managed, barnyard manure is a valuable fertilizer because of its nitrogen and phosphate content; its composition varies greatly depending upon the animals that produce it.
The Tinedale Farm, in Kaukauna, Wisconsin collects manure from the farm's 1800 dairy cows and taken to a digester which collects methane gas which is formed as manure decomposes.

 Land Application of Animal Manure
The value of manure nutrients is dependent on the nutrient status of the field to which it is applied, the nutrient needs of the crop to be grown, the nutrient content of the manure, and the cost of purchased nutrients.
Nutrient content of animal manure is variable, depending on the type and age of animal, feed source, housing type, handling method, temperature, and moisture content.
Use of manure and fertilizer as nutrient sources for crop production must be managed properly to ensure that they do not contaminate ground or surface water.

 Poultry Manure Management
Manure application to this subsoil does not appear to be a greater threat to environmental quality, due to fecal bacteria survival in reclaimed mine soil, than surface application in the same environment.
In general, poultry manure (an organic source of nitrogen) and synthetic fertilizer (a nonorganic source of nitrogen) did not differ in their effects on the nematode communities throughout one growing season.

 Bearville Sheep Farm
The idea behind manure 'tea' is that the water breaks the manure down into smaller particles and disperses the nutrients throughout the water.
When applied around the garden, the plants absorb the water more quickly than if you spread the manure around the garden and wait for the rain to help wash some of the nutrients into the ground.
One of the most natural, 'organic' fertilizers you can use is manure.

Weigh the bucket with the tarp and manure.
Manure application to land has been an integral part of agriculture for centuries.

G1881 Generating Methane Gas From Manure, MU Extension
Manure collection from the livestock production facility and feeding to the digester should be done at least once daily.
Ammonia toxicity is a major concern in the anaerobic digestion of livestock manure.
Typically about one-third of the energy in the manure gas is needed to maintain the necessary 95 degree F temperature in the digester.

County-based estimates of nitrogen and phosphorus content of animal manure in the United States for 1982, 1987, and ...
Manure nutrient content is in units of kilograms per */ > /* year as N or P. Computations are based on estimates of */ > /* the nutrient content on daily wastes produced per */ > /* 1000 lbs.
Therefore, the animal manure, nitrogen and phosphorus estimates for some counties are an underestimate of the total nutrient form animal manure in those counties.
These data on nutrients in manure can be compared to fertilizer inputs of nutrients.

Horse Manure Management: The Nitrogen Enhancement System
In addition, when horse manure is mixed with sawdust or wood chips, and spread on farm fields, it often stunts crop growth.
The amount of horse manure/sawdust that can be safely applied to a soil is based primarily on the nutrient needs of the crop, the soil nutrient levels, and the nutrient content of the manure/sawdust mixture.
Managing horse manure in suburban areas is often a problem because land, to properly store and utilize the manure for crop production, is limited.

A to Z's of Gardening: Manure
This is because fresh manure is very high in nitrogen and burns plants.

 Designing Chicken Manure
However, the most common use for chicken manure today is as a fertilizer for agricultural fields.
Chicken manure can also be used to feed ruminant animals, such as cattle, that can extract unused nutrients.
The two components of chicken manure that cause the most concern for runoff are nitrogen and phosphorous, but both elements are necessary for good bird health, egg laying and weight gain.

Confined Animal Production and Manure Nutrients
Census of agriculture data were used to estimate manure nutrient production and the capacity of cropland and pastureland to assimilate nutrients.
About 20 percent of the Nation’s onfarm excess manure nitrogen is produced in counties that have insufficient cropland for its application at agronomic rates (23 percent for phosphorus).
In these cases, most counties with farms that produce ""excess"" nutrients have adequate crop acres not associated with animal operations, but within the county, on which it is feasible to spread the manure at agronomic rates.

 Manure Storage Entering Procedures
A worker in a confined space or manure storage area should wear a body harness with a safety line.
The safety line should be held by enough people and/or a winch so that the worker can be pulled out of the area if a problem develops.
Make it as easy as possible for the worker to exit the manure storage area quickly.

This will force us to suspend judgment on the question of how these things are by nature, in and of themselves, insofar as we have no rational grounds on which to prefer our appearances and insofar as we are not willing to accept that something can have incompatible properties by nature.
