Order Isoptera, The Colony, Castes, Termite Ecology
Isoptera is the insect order to which the termites belong.
The body plan or morphology of termites is rather simple indicating that they diverged very early in insect evolution from a generalized insect ancestor with gradual metamorphosis and the ability to fold the wings flat over the back.
The name Isoptera (iso = equal; ptera = wing) refers to the adult primary reproductives which possess two pairs of equal length wings.

The Termite - Termites - What is a Termite? - The Genus Isoptera - The Mighty Termite - The Wood Eater - White Ants
Isoptera, comes from the Greek meaning Equal-Wings, because when the termite was first discovered, it was believed to be some kind of flying insect; which it is but only, just like the ant, when the young reproductive kings and queens take flight to find new nest sites, so that its species continues to flourish.
All termites are social insects and colonies are composed of a distinct social order which include, the Queen, workers, nymphs, soldiers, larvae, and flying-termites.
Below is a group of Flying-Termites, the future Kings and Queens of new colonies.
