 Salamanders & Newts
Among salamanders, fertilization typically involves the deposit of a sperm plug by the male, which is picked up by the cloaca of the female, allowing internal fertilization.
The only salamanders known that practice true external fertilization (male "silts" laid eggs with sperm) are in the families Cryptobranchidae, Sirenidae, and Hynobiidae.

On the Zoogeography of the Holarctic Region, by Karl Patterson Schmidt
The Hynobiidae, which are both primitive and generalized, scarcely reach Europe, and have developed five genera and twenty-two species in eastern Asia.
The latter, and the still more specialized American family Plethodontidae are unrepresented in Asia, and the extraordinary development of the American salamander fauna is strikingly shown by the presence of two highly peculiar types, the Sirenidae and the Amphiumidae.
The newt fauna ( Triturus) of the two areas is poor when compared with that of Europe, where the newts have undergone an expansion comparable with that of the Hynobiidae in eastern Asia and the Ambystomidae in North America.

 Autodax: Feeding in Salamandrella keyserlingi
Salamandrella keyserlingi of the family Hynobiidae is the most widespread salamander in the world, ranging across the whole of Asia and into Europe.
It is unusual in that it can freeze in winter and resume activity after it thaws.
You can see the action of the tongue as it pulls the termite into the salamander's mouth.

Asiatic salamander - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Asiatic Salamanders (Family Hynobiidae) are rather primitive salamanders spread all over Asia.
This page was last modified 17:46, 25 May 2005.
And unlike other salamander families which reproduce internally, male hynobiids focus on egg sacs rather than females during breeding (Hasumi, 2002).

Hynobiids live in eastern Asia, and the cryptobranchids live in China and Japan (the giant salamander) and North America (the hellbender).
The families Hynobiidae and Cryptobranchidae comprise the most primitive salamanders, based on bonestructure and the fact that they have external fertilization (eggs laid in water and sperm deposited over them).
Salamanders are a very old group that diverged early from the other amphibian stocks (frogs and caecilians) but are related to them by characteristics of tooth form and skin structure.

Newt and Salamander Discussion Forum @ Caudata.org: References for Hynobiidae in captivity?
Dear all, I'm looking for references that deal with keeping and breeding the genus Hynobius in captivity.
I'm also interested in other Hynobiidae, but primarily Hynobius.
I don't keep any, but I am seriously considering it and I'd like to do my homework first.

 Hynobiidae (Cope, 1859) Asiatic Salamanders
Hynobiids are small to medium sized Salamanders found mostly throughout Asia.
The family Hynobiidae is related to the family Cryptobranchidae, with which it forms the Suborder Cryptobranchoidea (primitive Salamanders).
The total range is estimated around 12 million km

 Älteste Salamander in China nachgewiesen

Absence of characteristics found in other salamanders is noted where it is important for distinguishing hynobiids from other salamanders and/or determining their relationships to other salamanders.
The individual characteristics in most cases are shared with other salamanders and should not be interpreted as synapomorphies of the Hynobiidae.
The family Hynobiidae is fairly closely related to the family Cryptobranchidae (Larson, 1991; Larson and Dimmick, 1993), with which it forms the caudate suborder Cryptobranchoidea (see Duellman and Trueb, 1986).

There are also neotenic species, and neotenic tendencies in the families Salamandridae, Ambystomatidae, Plethodontidae, Dicamptodontidae, and Hynobiidae.
The families Amphiumidae, Sirenidae, Cryptobranchidae, and Proteidae retain larval characteristics into adulthood, to varying degrees.
The only family without representatives in North America is the Asiatic family Hynobiidae.

Most salamanders live in the Northern Hemisphere; they are absent in the Australo-Papuan and Ethiopian regions.
Hynobiidae is the only family of salamanders restricted to the Palearctic region.
At the family level, the greatest diversity is in the Nearctic region, where all families (except Hynobiidae) occur, and five families (Ambystomatidae, Amphiumidae, Dicamptodontidae, Rhyacotritonidae, and Sirenidae) are endemic.

Some extinct species known only from fossils are grouped into the families Batrachosauroididae, Karauridae, Prosirenidae and Scapherpetontidae.
A few Mesozoic fossil salamanders (genera Comonecturoides, Galverpeton and Hylaeobatrachus, each containing a single species) have not been assigned to taxonomic families or suborders.
These families are grouped into four taxonomic suborders as follows: Cryptobranchoidea (Cryptobranchidae, Hynobiidae), Karauroidea (Karauridae), Salamandroidea (Ambystomatidae, Amphiumidae, Batrachosauroididae, Dicamptodontidae, Plethodontidae, Prosirenidae, Proteidae, Rhyacotritonidae, Salamandridae, Scapherpetontidae) and Sirenoidea (Sirenidae).
