Gnetophyta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The plant division Gnetophyta or gnetophytes comprise three related families of woody plants grouped in the gymnosperms, a paraphyletic group of seed plant divisions.
The gnetophytes differ from other gymnosperms in having wood vessels as in the flowering plants (Angiosperms or Magnoliophytes), and it is thought that Gnetophytes may be the group of spermatophytes most closely related to the flowering plants.

 Welwitschia
Some older references have suggested that the Gnetophyta may represent a "missing link" in the evolution of flowering plants, but others say that vessels and double fertilization are examples of parallel evolution.
The leaves arise from a massive woody crown or trunk (caudex) in the center.
Double fertilization was once thought to be a strictly angiosperm characteristic.

 gnetophyta
Gnetophyta's unique fertilization feature is that a tube grows from the eggs to unite with the pollen tubes in order for fertilization to take place between the gametophytes.
Most flowering plants contain vessel elements, too, providing evidence to some botanists that the Gnetophyta might have been ancestral to angiosperms.
The sperm themselves are not motile, like we see in the cycads and gingko.
