 DEVELOPMENT I
However, some dicots show hypogeal germination so that the epicotyl extends, and in some monocots the mesocotyl extends carrying the cotyledon and attached endosperm upwards out of the ground.
In epigeal seedlings the apex of the emergent structure is bent over in a hook as long as it is below ground.
Many (but not all) dicots are epigeal so that the hypocotyl extends, carrying the cotyledons above ground.

 Cardiocrinum giganteum Plants At GardenBed.com
The plant has delayed epigeal germination and will often germinate in the spring but can take up to 2 years especially if the seed is stored prior to being sown[134].
An alternative is to mix the seed with some moist leafmould and seal it in a plastic bag.
Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a cold frame in the autumn.

Up to this point in time the seed draws upon the nutrients stored in the cotyledon (endosperm) to sustain it’s growth.
In certain plants, such as beans and tomatoes, the cotyledon also heads towards the suface right along with the plumule (see Epigeal Germination below); in other plants, such as peas, the plumule goes up alone while the cotyledon remains underground, known as Hypogeal Germination.
The plumule will always grow upwards and will become the stem and leaves of the plant.

Therefore, crops with hypogeal emergence can be seeded deeper than the similar sized seeds that have epigeal emergence because the energy source lasts longer.
The first true leaf doesn't emerge through the abrasive soil so the protective cap is not needed.
C) It takes more energy to pull the cotyledons above the soil surface with epigeal emergence than it does to push the coleoptile to the soil surface for hypogeal emergence.

In botany, a seed is described as epigeal when the cotyledons of the germinating seed expand, throw off the seed shell and become photosynthetic above the ground.
The converse, where the cotyledons remain non-photosynthetic, inside the seed shell, and below ground, is hypogeal.

It is best for beginners to start with the epigeal or "quick-type" seeds.
You probably think that lilies, because they are so big and beautiful, will take years and years to grow from seed but they don’t.

 GROWING LILIES
There are even two different forms of seed germination in the genus Lilium: epigeal, in which the first leaf is a cotyledon or seed leaf and hypogeal, in which the first leaf is a true leaf, the cotyledon leaf stage having been dispensed with altogether.

Genic-Cytoplasmic Inheritance of Cotyledon Position (Hypogeal Versus Epigeal) in the Interspecific Cross Phaseolus ...
The introduction of a hypogeal germination trait into Phaseolus vulgaris would reduce injury to seedlings emerging in crusted soils.
The inheritance of cotyledon position (hypogeal versus epigeal) was studied previously by several workers in the interspecific cross Phaseolus vulgaris (epigeal) x Phaseolus coccineus (hypogeal).
Lamprecht (1941) noted a monofactorial inheritance pattern and indicated that this trait could not be transferred from one species to the other.

ARS Publication request: Seedling Response to Elevated Co2 in Five Epigeal Species
We focused on effects of elevated CO2 (700 uL L-1) on seedling growth characteristics of five C3 species having epigeal germination morphology, which differed by a factor of 20 in seed mass.
Maximum area of cotyledonary leaves was a better predictor of total biomass (at day 16) than was initial (day zero) seedling mass.
Our data suggests that future increases in atmospheric CO2 will greatly improve the seedling stage competitive ability of C3 epigeal species with expanding (photosynthetic) cotyledons.
