It is currently threatened by encroachment by agricultural fields, wildlife poaching, loss of the surrounding forests, and increases in commercial prawn farming.
It is a seasonal wetland, with a gradient from freshwater to brackish water, and is an important feeding and breeding ground on migratory bird flyway.
Unlike most of the world's tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, whose trees tend to lose their leaves during the dry season to conserve moisture, the East Deccan dry evergreen forests retain their leaves year round.

The evergreen dry forests are dominated by Manilkara hexandra, Chloroxylon sweitenia, Drypetes sepiaria, Feronia limonia, Vitex altissima, Syzygium spp., Drypetes sepiaria, and Chukrasia tabularis, with the scrub and regenerating forests characterized by Bauhinia racemosa, Pterospermum suberifolium, Cassia fistula, and Dichrostachys cineria (Gunatilleke and Gunatilleke 1990).
Tropical dry forests cover most of the ecoregion, but within the ecoregion there are a number of distinct habitat types (of sub-regional extent).

The forests of Point Calimere, also known the Vedaranyam forests, are one of the last refuges of the dry evergreen forests that were once typical of the East Deccan dry evergreen forests ecoregion.
It is the apex of the Cauvery River delta, and marks a nearly right-angle turn in the coastline.
There is a Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary here, which includes the cape and its three natural habitat types: dry evergreen forests, Mangrove forests, and wetlands.
