Dicotyledon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dicotyledons or "dicots" is a name for a group of flowering plants whose seed typically contains two embryonic leaves or cotyledons.
Flowering plants that are not dicotyledons are monocotyledons, often having one embryonic leaf only.
These may be distinguished from all other flowering plants by the structure of their pollen.

 dicotyledon
Dicotyledons are characterized by the presence of two seed leaves, or cotyledons, in the embryo, which is usually surrounded by the endosperm.
The castor is a dicotyledon, a plant in which the developing plant has two leaves, developed from the cotyledon.
In maize, a monocotyledon, there is a single leaf developed from the scutellum.

 MSN Encarta - Seed
In most other plants this development occurs prior to seed dispersal: the embryonic root, or radicle, usually grows toward the micropyle; the embryonic bud, called plumule, or epicotyl, is at the end of the embryo opposite to the radicle; the embryonic stem, or hypocotyl, connects the radicle with the seed leaves, or cotyledons.
In gymnosperms, several cotyledons are usually present; among angiosperms two great groups of plants exist, one group having but one cotyledon in the seed and known as the monocotyledons, and the other with two cotyledons and known as dicotyledons.
The cotyledons serve as centers of absorption and storage, drawing nutritive material from the endosperm.

Dicotyledon: Dicotyledon embryos usually have two cotyledons (or 'seed leaves') that store food enabling the plants to start to grow.
Cotyledon: 'Seed leaf,' usually stores food in dicotyledons and absorbs food in monocotyledons.
Dicots usually have broad leaves with netted veins, and flower parts in multiples of four or five.

As the Agrobacterium-mediated method of transferring genes has in the past been limited to the dicotyledon variety of plants, it has not been efficient on the transformation of monocotyledon plants (corn) because they are not naturally susceptible to A. tumefaciens infection (De La Riva et al.
tumefaciens contains a Ti plasmid (tumour-inducing) which normally infects dicotyledon plant cells, making the bacteria an excellent vector for the transfer of foreign DNA.
Recently however, after experimenting with different initial materials, various culture conditions, different bacterial strains for infection, and "super-binary" vectors, the Agrobacterium-mediated method was shown to be efficient in transforming corn (Ishida et al., 1996).
