Cultivar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cultivars that have originated as hybrids of different species are exotic, as is a plant from a different continent, or even a different part of the same country.
Cultivars may be either particularly desirable selections from populations of a single species, or hybrids between species.
In agricultural science, a cultivar is a cultivated selection that can be propagated reliably in a prescribed manner.

 Purple Loosestrife Cultivars
These cultivars are a source of viable pollen and viable seed, and they will cross with wild populations of loosestrife.
A garden population that does not produce seed could be a population of cultivars or clones with the same-length style morphology growing in the same area.
No cultivar was found to be female sterile, and seed germination rates were between 30-100%, with the majority of germination rates over 50% (Anderson and Ascher, 1993).

If a cultivar's optimum harvest season is limited, but it fills an industry need for a cultivar during that time frame, it would be considered an advantage.
Some cultivars produce high sugar early which declines with bloom, some reach their peak later in the season, while others maintain a relatively high sugar content for an extended period.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden: Cultivar Crazy—Preserving the Genetic Heritage of Plants
Cultivars (the plants that have additional names in single quotes after the two-part botanical names) are prized for their unusual characteristics, and the surest way for a grower to guarantee that you'll get the desired traits of the parent plants is to propagate them asexually, typically from cuttings (as opposed to sexually, from seed).
The bottom line is that when you buy, say, Aster novae-angliae 'Purple Dome', a cultivar of the native New England aster known for its compact, mounded habit as well as its flashy deep purple flowers, you're buying a clone—a plant that is genetically identical to every other specimen of 'Purple Dome' in existence.
With the advent of high-tech tools, researchers have discovered that plant species generally have high levels of genetic variation, and that if we're serious about saving plants we need to preserve their genetic diversity.

 What is a Cultivar ?
It is important to note that not all plants in cultivation are cultivars, and not all cultivars are in cultivation!
A cultivar name can only be given to cultivated plants whose origin or selection is primarily due to the intentional actions of mankind.
The standard may only be a description or illustration and in the case of grain crops it is usually just a sample of seed.

 Lawn Grass Cultivar Selection
Cultivars are evaluated based on color, quality, leaf texture, seedling vigor, cold hardiness, summer stress tolerance, disease and insect susceptibility, etc. The results are compiled for each cultivar, summarized, ranked and then published in yearly reports.
As with most plants, each turfgrass species has a number of cultivars, varieties or hybrids, each of which are subtly different genetically.
Consider the cultivar(s) present, percent germination, date of germination test, percentage of inert matter and weed seeds and, if mixed species, the ratio of the species.

How to name a new cultivar
A single plant is not a cultivar: a cultivar is a group of individual plants which collectively is distinct from any other, which is uniform in its overall appearance and which remains stable in its attributes.
There are different sorts of cultivar ranging from clones, which should be genetically identical, to tightly controlled seed-raised cultivars such as F1 hybrids.
Many of the Rules in the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (Cultivated Plant Code or ICNCP) deal with sorting out problems which have arisen in past nomenclature.

I feel that I have to re-state the obvious: a plant is not a cultivar - an assemblage of plants with similar attributes may be recognised as a cultivar so that a plant may belong to a cultivar.
The cultivar is the most useful category of cultivated plants as it enables growers to define exactly what they are growing, and buyers to ask for exactly what they want.
In the case of a variant selected from the wild to be a cultivar, the person selecting the plant on recognising the novel attributes (the collector) is generally the originator.

 OAK CULTIVAR NAME REGISTRATION
The ICRA system aims to promote stability in the naming of cultivated plants by promoting lists of authenticated names in a number of important groups of plants which are commonly cultivated.
While the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (I.C.B.N.) deals with the rules for forming the Latin names of plants, the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (I.C.N.C.P.) deals with the naming of two categories, the cultivar and the Group - i.e., those categories of plants that arise and are maintained by mankind.
ICRAs record cultivar and Group names, not the cultivars or Groups themselves, so one does not register a new cultivar with an ICRA, one registers their names.
