They are herbivorous feeding mainly on dry coconut flesh by cracking open coconut shells with their powerful claws, dead fruits and leaf but have also been observed eating dead animal carcasses.
Being a slow grower, it takes 4 to 8 years to reach reproduction age, when females would release their fertilized eggs in the sea in summer after carrying for some time.
