 The Broccoflower
The broccoflower grows in the same climates as the broccoli and the cauliflower.
The reason that the new vegetable did not succeed as a new profitable product was because of the taste.
This company specializes in buying newly developed products and distributing them to other countries.

I suspect that we are witnessing one of the greatest problems with GMO labeling - what does "genetically modified" or "genetic engineering" actually mean?
Technically, I would say anything derived from a traditional breeding program is genetically modified - you would never find anything that looks like a typical commercial tomato in the wild!
I do not know of any "genetic engineering" (i.e., direct gene transfer outside of sexual means) that has gone on in producing broccoflower.

 The Tangled Webs They Weave
Although this day-glow green hybrid is grown like any other vegetable, its seeds are not yet commercially available.
The name of the vegetable in question is broccoflower, and it's the result of a genetic cross between broccoli and cauliflower.
Broccoli flower sports the hard, granular head of cauliflower plus a healthy dose of green chlorophyll thrown in—compliments of broccoli.

 Notes from the Under...stimulated:
Today, along with white cauliflower in markets, you'll find broccoflower (less expensive than white) and occasionally purple cauliflower.
Broccoflower originated with a green cauliflower grown in Italy and has heads ranging from lime-green to yellow-green and a taste more like cauliflower (but a little sweeter) than broccoli.
Most are smaller, lighter in weight, and less crisp and dense than white cauliflower.

Broccoflower has a combined taste of cauliflower and broccoli and is prepared like cauliflower.
Broccoli rabe, also called Italian broccoli, has thin green stems that are much more tender than broccoli, with soft, velvety leaves and a small amount of floret.
To cook broccoflower, slice or break off the florets, wash them and then steam or microwave quickly.

 Special Report
The genetically altered vegetable, Broccoflower, needs your help.
“It’s likely that Broccoflower’s father is a Broccoli stalk and his mother is a head of Cauliflower.” Dr. Kyle Brown said while chewing on a stem of Celery.
Left on the porch of Farmer Joseph Robertson sometime in 1982, Broccoflower has known nothing of his true heritage.

 [Market-farming] Broccolini Trademarks
As far as I know, the company which contracts and markets broccoflower has ownership of the term and the product itself, starting with the basic genetics of the broccoflower cultivar.
I'm not sure what the legal vehicle is, but an example is the use of the term broccoflower.
I believe these ownerships have been tested in court and approved.

The most popular type of broccoli sold in the United States is known as Italian green, or Calabrese, named after the Italian province of Calabria where it first grew.
Other vegetables related to broccoli are broccolini, a mix between broccoli and kale, and broccoflower, a cross between broccoli and cauliflower.
Broccoli sprouts have also recently become popular as a result of research uncovering their high concentration of the anti-cancer phytochemical, sulforaphane.
