Ash tree - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ash is also used as a food plant by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species - see list of Lepidoptera which feed on Ashes.

Does Your Ash Tree Have the Emerald Ash Borer?
Infested ash trees first show dieback of upper branches, progressing to death of major branches, water sprouts on the trunk, and finally, water sprouts at the base of the otherwise dead tree.
It is commonly attracted to ash trees that are under stress and while it can kill the tree, this is often a slow process and good maintenance of the trees coupled with insecticide treatment at the proper time can minimize the damage.

European Ash - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is a deciduous tree 20-35 m tall, and is readily distinguished from other species of ash in that it has black buds, unlike the brown buds of most other ashes.
The leaves of the European Ash are often among the last to open in spring, and the first to fall in autumn if an early frost strikes.
The female flowers develop into fruits, and because they hang in bunches the fruits of the ash tree are known as 'ash keys'.

National Wildlife: The Great American Pastime Tree - white ash
Trees of harvestable size that become infected with the microbe, which is transmitted by small plant-sucking insects called leafhoppers, will succumb in 5 to 10 years.
At the same time, the branches of female ash trees sag with copious crops of flat, winged seeds that are shaped like elfin canoe paddles and are an important food resource for wood ducks, quail, wild turkeys, grouse, grosbeaks, cardinals and other songbirds.
The blight is most severe in areas where the forest has been invaded by fingers of housing and their attendant cultivated plants and weeds that attract the insects.

 Ash Tree
Like most of those trees which, from their flowering before the bursting of their leaf-buds, are termed "precocious," the Ash is probably often cross-fertilized by the wind.
There are frequent allusions to the Ash throughout European literature, since its tough saplings were naturally chosen by both Greeks and Romans for their spears, whilst the agricultural writers of the latter nation recommend its wood for agricultural implements, a use to which it is still largely applied.
Few trees are less particular as to soil than the Ash; but perhaps the sugar which in warmer latitudes exudes as "manna" from allied species produces in the North that greater luxuriance of growth which gives us the tree in its highest beauty.

 Ash Alert
Emerald ash borer is an insect native of Asia (eastern Russia, northeastern China, Mongolia, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea), where it can be found on several species of ash and is not considered a pest.

Some of the trees attacked by the insect appear to have been stressed or weakened by drought, disease, or poor soil; however, many healthy ashes have been infested and killed as well.
