Caudata Culture Species Entry - Amphiuma
Amphiuma tridactylum, the three-toed amphiuma, is the second largest of the three species reaching a maximum size of 106 cm (41.7 inches) in total length.
Amphiuma means, the two-toed amphiuma, is the largest of the three species, reaching a maximum size of 116 cm (45.6 inches) in total length.
Amphiuma pholeter, the one-toed amphiuma, has limbs and a head that are proportionately shorter than A.

 Two-Toed Amphiuma
Amphiumas have two pairs of legs, and the three species, all of which occur in the southeastern United States, differ in regard to the number of toes at the ends of these limbs.
Amphiumas are less aquatic than their bodies might suggest, and it appears that they actually lay their eggs at the interface of water and land, rather than in a strictly aquatic habitat.
Amphiumas, especially this largest of the three species, are notorious for having a vicious (though not at all venomous) bite and should be handled with some respect.

 Amphiumidae
These amphiumas breed in the winter or spring, fertilize eggs internally, and lay a string of eggs in muddy, shallow water.
Both forelimbs and hindlimbs are extremely reduced in size and appear nonfunctional, although the animals move them.
Limbs are present in two pairs but are extremely tiny relative to the large size of the body.

Congo Eel, aka Congo Snake, or the Amphiuma
The amphiumas have a long, thin body, with short legs, and a black or dark brown coloring with small, light spots.

The diet of the amphimua consists of some spiders and snails, small snakes, insects, crayfish and smaller amphibians.

 Two-toed Amphiuma
Two-toed amphiumas mate in water, and the female lays about 200 eggs in a beadlike string.
When the larvae hatch, they are about 5 cm (2 in) long; their tiny limbs are of more use to them at this stage than when they metamorphose to adult form, at about 7.5 cm (3 in) long.
The female coils around the eggs as they lie on the bottom and protects them until they hatch about 5 months after being laid.

In amphiumas, fertilization of eggs is internal (similar to humans), meaning their eggs are fertilized within the female's body before she lays them.
Two-toed amphiumas have tiny, nearly useless front and hind legs with two toes on each leg (Figure 1).
However, in sirens fertilization is believed to be external (similar to most fish), meaning the female lays unfertilized eggs and then they are fertilized by a male.

In times of drought, or in ephemeral wetlands, crayfish traps are not an effective method for capturing aquatic salamanders.
