Identification of Ethylene-Responsive Genes in Flowers
Abscission in flowers could be regulated by an increase in ethylene production, an increase in ethylene responsiveness, or both.
One of the most common causes of quality loss of cut flowers and potted flowering plants is flower abscission.
It has also been shown to prevent flower, petal, and bud abscission on several species of flowering potted plants, but this requires spraying the entire plant with an STS solution.

SHIPPING AND ETHYLENE EFFECTS ON FLOWER BUD ABSCISSION IN POTTED HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS
Shipping potted flowering hibiscus is a commercial problem due to abscission of flowers and buds.
However, abscission of undeveloped stage 1 and 2 buds increased with temperature and shipping duration.
These studies showed that hibiscus is sensitive to ethylene, which can result in loss of buds and flowers.

Certain crops are prone to premature abscission and dehiscence, partially because of their extreme sensitivity to environmental fluctuations.
Molecular approaches to abscission and its regulation have generally focused on cell separation determinants operating in the abscission zone.
For example, transgenic leaf abscission incidence in fruiting cotton was reduced by as much as two-thirds relative to control plants (Lashbrook, Rangwala, Perlak and Klee; unpublished).

Re: Why do leaves fall off trees when the temperatures drop.
The photoperiod, or length of the daily light period, is considered the environmental trigger for the processes of fall leaf senescence and leaf abscission.
Sprays of a chemical, Ethephon, that releases ethylene, are used commercially to promote leaf abscission prior to cotton harvest.

CITRUS STYLAR ABSCISSION IN TISSUE CULTURES
The most critical nutrient in the test medium appears to be sucrose because abscission is completely prevented in its absence.
This report reviews research on the use of flower explants to study the regulation of Citrus abscission by phytohormones and nutrients and to identify effective growth regulators for fruit production.
Nutrients, like phytohormones, can also control stylar abscission in pistil explants.

ROLE OF CELL WALL HYDROLASES IN TOMATO FLOWER ABSCISSION
A quantitative indicator of the role of each gene in flower abscission was obtained using the ribonuclease protection assay (RPA), which is an extremely sensitive procedure for the detection and quantitation of low abundance mRNAs.
The long term goal is to enhance productivity of horticultural crops through more precise control over the shedding of flowers and fruit.
INVESTIGATOR: Del Campillo, E. Abscission is a process of cell wall degradation that results in the shedding of plant organs.

ARS Publication request: Cis-Acting Regulatory Elements in the Bean Abscission Cellulase Gene Promoter
Technical Abstract: Abscission involves controlled degradation of cell wall material that leads to cell separation in a distinct layer of plant cells that comprise the area of organ detachment or abscission zone (AZ).
Accompanying organ separation is an increase in the activity of several cell wall hydrolases including polygalacturonase and endo beta-1,4-glucanase (cellulase).
Both ethylene and auxin are known to be important temporal regulators of abscission and hydrolase gene expression, however, information regarding the molecular genetic regulation of these cell wall-degrading enzymes is limited.
